Duck Rock is a pretty funky album, most of the tracks are very cool indeed, although slightly cheesy now. The single Buffalo Gals sounds a touch like Grandmaster Flash if he were holidaying in South Africa, Double Dutch and Soweto are just fucking bizarre New Wave tracks. For your enjoyment…

This album is much more upbeat, much more accessible, but still really cool. We’ve been trying to find some adult alternative for the radio station, and this pretty much ticks all the boxes - this is pop done the way it should be done. Think U2 if it wasn’t a pretentious vehicle for cunty Bono… (Plus the cover is cool, and its impossible to search for the band on iTunes, try it………..)

Anyway, I present this to you in the full knowledge that this is an extremely hilarious, cliched and terrible, album. It’s amazing in that it’s cheesier than a cheese plate and grapes fed to a fat man. It’s King Pleasure from the wonderful album King Pleasure Sings/Annie Ross Sings, but Annie Ross is clearly a dumb bitch (don’t sue, sweet sue) so King Pleasure it is. I’ll try to describe it: jazz, swing, campy doo-wop, and an inspiration for Van Morrison (so says Wikipedia…) Take a listen, it’s easier than talking.

Talk Talk are a mildly interesting band just by themselves because they released two albums of pretty standard 80’s New Wave fare (and you may recall No Doubt covering one of their bigger hits It’s My Life) but then slowly morphed into some sort of weird ambient art rock thing (it’s difficult to explain). This album they have some of the New Wave synthpop in there, but its mainly moving over to the ambient rock phase. If you like it look up their next album Spirit Of Eden.

The title is actually a misspelling, not my absolute idiocy (it was their absolute idiocy), but never mind, this was and is their finest album (considering they disbanded after they made it). Enjoy.

So with that I bought a copy of a compilation Highs In The Mid-60’s, garage rock from the mid 1960’s. There are 23 albums in the compilation and counting (similar to Pebbles and Nuggets), and the first, the one I own, is given up to teenage garage bands from Los Angeles. The recording quality is not great for a great number of the songs, and most aren’t of the quality of other bands at the time, well know bands that survive in full album mode. But that should be taken as given - the majority of these bands released one single and disappeared into the woods/high finance.

According to Wikipedia, Ra apparently went to Saturn, and this is a direct quote:

“… my whole body changed into something else. I could see through myself. Bug was the band’s third album and the last before Lou Barlow left (he came back in 2007), and it was released in 1988. My favourite Dinosaur Jr. track “Freak Scene” starts of the album, and it only gets louder and faster from there. I can only stand a very few albums that are this heavy (Sonic Youth have a few in that list actually). You can really hear the difference when Lou Barlow left, albums like Where You Been sound completely different, much less grungy and experimental, perhaps I’ll put that up soon too.
