So this one is to make up for saying nasty things about Wu-Tang since Ivana is a big fan or so she says. Also I think its an apt follow-on from the last post. I happen to enjoy greatly the alternative hip-hop of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and so it would be no surprise that I am also a fan of Eric B. & Rakim, and their New York hip-hop. It seems to work so well with the Sonic Youth sound, whilst watching Larry Clark’s Kids, but you get the picture anyway.
Eric B. & Rakim’s 1987 debut album Paid In Full had two big hits, “Eric B. is President” and “I Know You Got Soul”, big in hip-hop standards for the day (back in the day etc etc) and they sampled James Brown!!!! Anyway, they are definitely worth a listen even if you name isn’t Ivana. I was thinking of posting the Souls Of Mischief, which I may do next week, and the difference between the East Coast and the West Coast sound couldn’t be more obvious. Love the tacky cover.
